Wo Fat

Wo Fat, nestled right on High Road in Loughton, brings a bold flair to classic Chinese cuisine with a modern twist-and let me tell you, it’s not your average takeaway joint. Located at 270-272 High Rd, Loughton IG10 1RB, this restaurant effortlessly blends convenience with comfort, offering dine-in seating, takeaway, and delivery for those nights when the couch is calling but you’re still craving something fiery and flavorful.

As soon as you step inside Wo Fat, there’s an inviting vibe that’s hard to ignore. The space is accessible to everyone, thanks to its wheelchair-friendly entrance and seating, and the dining area feels relaxed without being overly casual. It’s the kind of place where you can pop in for a quick lunch solo or gather with friends for a satisfying dinner spread. Either way, the service is swift, and the team behind the counter knows the menu like the back of their hand.

Let’s talk food. If you're a fan of bold flavors, the Szechuan Hot & Sour Soup is a knockout starter-spicy, tangy, and rich enough to warm your soul. Then there’s the Pan Fried Dumpling and Spring Rolls Peking Style, both crispy on the outside and bursting with flavor inside. The dumplings in particular strike that perfect balance between juicy filling and golden crust, and they come highly recommended by regulars.

But the real charm of Wo Fat lies in the way it straddles both traditional and trendy. You’ll find comforting staples like Sweet and Sour Pork that take you back to the classics, while dishes like Deep Fried Chili Squid or Mashed Prawns on Toast with Sesame Seeds add a gourmet edge. The latter is surprisingly addictive-crispy, slightly sweet, and with a nutty finish thanks to the sesame crust. If you're into texture and layers of flavor, don’t skip it.

Vegetarians are not left out either. The Vegetable Spring Rolls are light, fresh, and perfectly crisp, and the Cucumber Salad offers a refreshing break from the richer plates, tossed in a subtly sweet dressing that cuts through any heaviness. On the noodle front, the Pad Thai delivers all the chewy-salty-sweet satisfaction you’d expect, while the Ramen adds a heartier, broth-based option to the mix.

Now, if you’re just dropping in for a quick bite or looking to keep things light, Wo Fat also does a fine job with small plates. Whether it’s a few dumplings and a glass of wine or some Chicken Wings paired with a cold beer, the menu caters to casual cravings just as well as full-on feasts. And yes, they do serve alcohol-including beer, spirits, and wine-so whether it’s a chilled rosé or a warm Chinese rice wine you're after, they’ve got you covered.

Dessert? Sure thing. Lychee makes a sweet, cooling end to the meal, especially after something spicy. And there’s something nostalgic and oddly satisfying about cracking open a Fortune Cookie at the end of the night. It’s a simple ritual, but it adds a little fun to the experience.

One of the things that makes Wo Fat stand out is how it remains approachable. It’s popular for both lunch and dinner, and it draws a mix of locals-from solo diners stopping in on a lunch break to groups gathering for a casual evening meal. The flexibility of the space, plus the availability of late-night bites, means there’s no wrong time to drop by. Whether you're grabbing takeaway for a quiet evening at home or making it your go-to spot for a low-key night out, Wo Fat finds a way to fit your mood.

What’s especially nice is that the menu isn’t locked into one rigid idea of Chinese food. There are subtle influences and adaptations that make it feel current, even global in some ways. The inclusion of corn soup, chili squid, and ramen shows a broader take, embracing different regions and styles without losing authenticity.

For those who appreciate the balance between quality, price, and portion size, Wo Fat delivers on all fronts. You get generous servings, thoughtfully plated even for takeaway orders, and the flavors are consistent across the board-no soggy noodles or lukewarm mains here.

With its convenient location, friendly service, and diverse offerings-from fiery soups to crispy starters and hearty mains-Wo Fat ticks all the right boxes for a satisfying dining experience in Loughton.

Went there for a family birthday dinner. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The menu was well priced. The portions didn't seem huge, but we're quite filling. I was amazed at the quality of the food. I think you are able to bring your own alcohol since they don't serve alcohol there (just soft drinks). They serve hot plates and have tiny little dishwarmers to keep the food warm.i would go there again. 5 people dined and the bill came to £70. Cute little fortune cookies are served after the meals.
